St Thaney Hermitage
St Thaney
Hermitage
Our cabin Hermitage at Sophia's Grove, named for St Thaney, Protector of Women, provides private retreat space for women in need of a temporary place of safety. Refuge is offered in the spirit of Celtic & Benedictine hospitality.
About St Thaney:
St Thaney was a 6th-century Celtic saint who was raped when she was very much still a child. When her pregnancy became obvious, her family rejected her: she was pushed off a cliff and left to die.
Thaney survived the fall and escaped in a coracle across the Firth of Forth to St Serf’s community in Culross, where she gave birth to a baby boy, the future St Mungo (Kentigern).
She is a patron saint for women facing abuse & rejection, offering renewed hope & new beginnings. St Thaney & St Mungo are now two of the most beloved saints of Scotland, and are especially commemorated in the City of Glasgow.
